Nature Activity
๐ฆ Homemade Bird Feeder
A fun and simple activity that helps local birds while teaching children about nature and wildlife.
What you'll need
- ๐ Bread
- โญ Cookie Cutter
- ๐ฅค Straw
- ๐ฅ Peanut Butter
- ๐ฅ Plastic Knife or Spoon
- ๐ฝ๏ธ Paper Plate
- ๐ป Bird Seed
- ๐งถ String or Yarn
Step-by-Step Guide
- 1 Toast the bread in a toaster.
- 2Use a cookie cutter to cut a shape out of the bread. You can use any shape.
- 3Use a straw to poke a hole in the top of the bread for the string.
- 4Spread the peanut butter across the entire piece of bread. If your children are too young to use a plastic knife, place a spoonful of peanut butter on the bread and let them spread it out with a plastic spoon or their fingers.
- 5Spread the bird seed on a paper plate. Shake the plate from side to side so it is entirely covered with bird seed.
- 6Gently press the bread with the peanut butter side facing down onto the bird seed.
- 7Let the peanut butter and bird seed harden for about an hour.
- 8Put a string or piece of yarn through the hole and tie a knot at the end in order to hand it from a tree.
- 9Hang the bird feeder from a tree and enjoy bird watching!
๐ฟ Nature Tip
Ask an adult before using the toaster and make sure your bird feeder is hung somewhere safe where birds can easily find it.
